Teaching Cause and Effect:Super cute poster to illustrate to students cause and effect.

2nd grade Cause and Effect Fun Activity:
===Amelia Bedelia===
This week we have been working on cause and effect while reading Amelia Bedelia books. Thanks to Donors Choose, we have tons of her books to select from! And let me just say, that my kiddos have LOVED reading Amelia Bedelia so far. I was kinda shocked when the majority of my students said that they have never heard of her, but more than shocked I was super excited to introduce them to this crazy character!

Today, as we were reading "Amelia Bedelia and the Baby," we charted the cause/effects that we found. In my 2nd class I had the students write on the poster, but forgot to take a picture. That allowed me to keep reading as they were charting!

We also made a bubble map to brainstorm what we have learned about Amelia Bedelia so far.

Then, the students chose 3 of the cause/effects from the story to make this little activity. I gave them each 3 index cards, folded them in half, and wrote the cause (outside) and effect inside). They drew Amelia Bedelia on manila paper, cut her out, and glued her onto the blue paper.

We will continue reading Amelia Bedelia for the rest of the week. I hope to make a little craftivity if I have time, but if not... oh well! Here are some Cause/Effect papers we will use for "Teach Us, Amelia Bedelia" and "Play Ball, Amelia Bedelia."

Classroom Data Wall
external image IMG_0253.JPG

Here is a sample of our ever changing Data Wall. The kids add a sticker every time they get a 100% on their spelling tests. As you can see from the sticker chart, we went from less that 50% of the kids achieving a 100% to almost 100% once we started keeping track of the data! The other charts consist of Excel graphs made up of various pieces of classroom data. The post-it notes on the graphs are the students "thinking" in regards to the data.

Sight Word Practice Pages

Here are some packets I made for my kindergarten class this year to practice reading and writing their sight words.
Kindergarten-sight-words

Download Week 1_look at the my see
Download Week 2_the is it my can
Download Week 3_he she is can said
Download Week 4_we like to go went
Download Week 5_on in are you am

On the first page, they read the sentences and color the sight words different colors (I color the boxes beforehand so they will know what colors to use).

On the second page, they rainbow write the words to practice spelling.
Kindergarten-sight-words-3

On the third page, they cut and paste the letters to make the words.
Sight-word-flashcards

The next pages are my favorites. They are flashcards that they can play games with (like Memory) or they can build sentences with the cards. The cards in each packet build on each other from week to week, so it's important that the kids do not lose them! (For example, you can combine words from packets 1 and 2 to make new sentences).
The last page is a page to practice writing sentences.
Even though the packets are labeled week 1 and week 2, etc., I do not necessarily use them that way. I do not give a child a new packet until she/he has mastered the previous one.
These are the first 5 packets, but I will post more soon.
I hope you can use these in your own classroom.
Enjoy!

READING COMPREHENSIONStory Maps are a great way to keep a visual of story elements. Here are some examples.story_map_1.jpgstory_map.jpg

Understanding Similarities and Differences or Comparing and Contrasting: a cute way to approach this by using paper plates as your circles giving students more writing room. Look at example:
